Hey, I'm a hgv driving groom. I drive my bosses horses to shows etc as she can't. But someone told me the other day that I can't drive any horse that isn't mine, unless I have a O license. I know this to be true for charging people. However it is part of my job to do this. Has anyone else heard about this and if so, how are normal grooms supposed to be able to afford the £600 per year for this license?

As far as I know it is the operator of a lorry who has to hold the operators licence, so this would be your employer, the owner of the lorry.

However, as a driver you must hold a Welfare of Animals during Transport Certificate of Competence since you are transporting for hire or reward (ie as part of your job). After September 2009 all new professional drivers of goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes will also need a Driver Certificate of Professional Competence

You must also comply with the driving hours legislation, which means that you cannot drive — or work — for more than 56hrs in any one week (from 00.00 on Monday to 23.59 on Sunday) or 90hrs in any two-week period and after six working days you must have a 24 hour rest period and must have a 24 hour and a 45 hour rest period in any two weeks. There is currently consultation going on about this by the British Equestrian Federation and others as this is being interpreted as meaning any work not just driving, which means that your work as a groom is counted as part of your driving hours

Thanks. I have just found out that if you go to shows, even if it's your own horses you need an O license. It is illegal for you to come back with any winnings, even just a rosette without an O license. Thanks for the info, will defo' look into that certificate.
