About this video

16 year old Monty is an ex-racer evented by Mandy at BE100 level, hoping to move up to Novice. Working with trainer Jon Rogers, the aim of the session is to teach Monty to maintain a good rhythm between fences and not to revert to rushing, a habit gained from racing. First, however, the quality of the canter must be improved in the warm-up, along with rider posture. Initially, Jon asks Mandy to ride a three loop serpentine trotting over poles on the centre line, in order to improve straightness and suppleness. Then a square in trot and canter creates more engagement and helps Mandy use seat, leg and hand to maintain the right canter for jumping. (The jumping part of the session follows.)
