About this video

GB Junior and Young Rider eventing gold medallist Willa Newton uses a pole exercise to improve 5 yr old stallion Cracker's athleticism, as "he can be a bit "straight-legged in his movement" she explains. During the warm-up, Willa ensures Cracker is in front of her leg and moving forwards to the bit. "Positioning poles on a half circle helps to keep the bend through Cracker's body and encourages him to push from behind and use his legs," she adds. Placed at 2.5m apart with alternate poles raised, Cracker works in trot and canter, learning from occasional mistakes. "It's a physically and mentally challenging exercise for a youngster" concludes Willa.
