  • Seven year old Dinky (who is working at Medium) is nervous in new places which makes him tense. Top British dressage rider and WEG silver medallist, Laura Bechtolsheimer says "relaxation comes from the brain and the body", so it's important not to hold him together. Laura shows Jenny a variety of simple techniques, including flexion within the transitions, to stop Dinky from setting against the hand. "The emphasis is on giving not holding" Laura says, which may appear counter-intuitive with a horse that rushes! Having softened the neck, lateral work softens Dinky behind the saddle. "It's about finding ways of making it easier for him."

  • Working on canter, Laura and Dr B continue Teddy's preparation for his first Medium test. The huge Teddy has a equally large canter which is not yet fully established. Laura 'changes gear' in the canter to create more collection. Dr B says "gradual movements make life easier for the horse. A quick fix would destroy the canter quality." With mini extensions, straightness is important and coming back on easy aids. "Baby half pass, counter canter and changes of pace teach the horse to cope with his body, stay in balance and gain confidence," Dr B explains. Teddy is more co-operative now but when he finds things difficult, Laura goes back to something easy!
